Consolidated & Part Loads

Part load and consolidated freight transport across South Africa.

Not every consignment needs a dedicated truck. Golden Star Carriers runs consolidated freight and part loads through our specialised hubs, combining smaller consignments travelling in the same direction into a single, cost-efficient move. For cargo that would leave a full vehicle mostly empty, part load transport is often the most economical way to move freight across South Africa, and it is one of the seven core services our fleet and our Ladysmith base are built around.

The basics

What a part load is, and when it is cheaper than a full truck.

A part load, sometimes called LTL (less-than-truckload) transport, is freight that does not need an entire vehicle to itself.

Part load, definedA part load takes up only a portion of a truck’s deck or trailer space rather than the whole vehicle. Instead of paying for capacity you do not use, your consignment shares the trailer with other freight moving in the same direction.
When it is cheaperIf your load is a handful of pallets, a partial container’s worth of goods, or any consignment that would leave a dedicated truck mostly empty, a part load lets you pay in proportion to the space you actually use, rather than the cost of an entire vehicle.
When a full load makes more senseOnce a consignment is large enough to fill, or nearly fill, a vehicle on its own, or when collection and delivery dates are fixed and cannot move, a dedicated full load is usually the better and more predictable option.
How it works

How consolidation works.

Consolidated freight is the process of combining several smaller consignments, from different clients, heading in a similar direction, onto one vehicle.

Combined into one moveSmaller consignments heading the same way are grouped together so the trip is shared, rather than each client paying for and running its own under-filled vehicle.
Routed through our specialised hubsConsolidated freight moves through Golden Star Carriers’ hub network rather than direct point to point, which is what allows several consignments to be combined onto a single vehicle in the first place.
Reaches destinations a full load wouldn’t justifyConsolidation is what makes some routes viable at all. A destination that would never justify a dedicated truck for one client’s cargo alone becomes reachable once several consignments share the trip.
Built for the job

The vehicles that carry part loads.

Consolidated freight typically runs on our curtain-sided tautliner classes, GPS-tracked with monthly roadworthy inspections and manufacturer-spec service intervals. A curtain-sided body allows side-loading and multiple drop points along one route without repacking the whole trailer at every stop.

Where it runs

Where consolidated freight runs.

Two of our primary corridors most often carry consolidated and part-load freight.

Durban ↔ Bloemfontein ↔ Kimberley

KZN to Northern Cape · this is explicitly a consolidated and part-loads corridor, serving Northern Cape destinations that a single dedicated load could rarely justify on its own.

N3

Durban ↔ Johannesburg

Daily super-link service · alongside full loads, this corridor also carries part-load freight consolidated with other consignments heading the same way. See our Durban to Johannesburg transport page.

Cover on every load

Protected on a shared trailer.

Handling disciplineConsolidated consignments are loaded and secured with the same discipline as any other freight on our fleet, so cargo sharing a trailer is packed, positioned and secured to travel safely alongside other consignments.
GIT insuranceEvery part load runs under our Goods-in-Transit cover, alongside Public Liability insurance, for the length of the trip, the same as a dedicated full load.
GPS trackingEvery vehicle in the fleet is GPS-tracked, with driver-behaviour monitoring feeding monthly coaching, whether it is running a single client’s full load or a consolidated mix.
The honest trade-off

Cheaper, but less flexible on timing.

A part load waits, within reason, for other consignments to fill the trailer, so it will not always leave or arrive on the exact schedule a dedicated truck could hold. If your dates are fixed and cannot move, a full load is the better choice. If you can allow a reasonable margin, our quote form already asks whether your dates are flexible up to three days, which is the kind of buffer that makes consolidation work well for everyone sharing the trailer.
